The Ferdinand Mural Project
Help Us Tell the Story of Ferdinand - to celebrate the people, landmarks, stories, and innovations from our town.
Help Make This Mural Happen!
Artist Adam Long will start soon painting the mural on the south-facing wall of the historic Fleig's Cafe. This campaign seeks to raise enough funds to extend the mural to the west-facing wall. The mural on the south wall will highlight the hardwood forests that defined the region and iconic buildings and people from the town.
Seek and Find Features will be woven into the mural to encourage visitors to experience the history of Ferdinand in an interactive format. A map key will guide visitors as they discover the hidden features like the Ferdy Flyer, and learn why they are important. By making history “playful” and visually immersive, the mural will help both children and adults meaningfully connect with Ferdinand's past.
Murals throughout Dubois County serve as “visual narratives” that tell stories from the past and present, and serve as inspirations for the future. Traditional Arts Today is leading this project in collaboration with the Ferdinand Historical Society, the owners of Fleig's Cafe, Framing Ferdinand (the town's Main Street initiative), Ferdinand Tourism, the Ferdinand Merchant's Association and the mural artist, Adam Long. We believe that the arts can build connections in the community, reduce isolation, promote quality of life, and provide economic benefits.
The mural on the west-facing wall provides a vision of what the area might have looked like before being settled. It includes the opportunity for people who visit the mural to take selfies under the Ferdinand arch.
Your gifts will pay for:
- Paint and other supplies for a 875 square foot mural for the west-facing wall
- Rental of equipment such as a lift and power washer
- Adam's time and effort to create and paint the mural
The mural will tell the story of Ferdinand, engage residents and visitors in learning the rich history of Ferdinand, attract tourists to provide economic benefits to the community, and inspire younger generations to achieve their dreams.
